Your Locomotive and Carriages: This service will normally be hauled by one of our iconic Double Fairlie locomotives designed over 150 years ago to haul large trains on the steep gradients and sharp curves of the Ffestiniog line. These quirky locomotives have all been built in our own historic workshops at Boston Lodge with stalwart Merddin Emrys the oldest completed in 1879 and David Lloyd George in 1992, whilst our brand-new Fairlie, James Spooner was launched towards the end of 2023. The modern carriages have been built at Boston Lodge, including our beautiful Pullman observation carriages which are available on this train, so this is the ultimate Ffestiniog Experience.

Journey Times: The Mountain Spirit generally has a morning departure at 10.40 and an afternoon departure at 14.20. Trains remain at Blaenau for approximately 50 minutes to enable you to stretch your legs, take some photos, and admire the locomotive before the return journey. The town centre is only 5-minute walk from the station and there are a few cafes and shops close by. The station shop has a small selection of gifts and light bites to take away. Pre-order takeaway options are available when booking.

What will you see: The scenery continually changes as the train crosses the estuary along the Cob embankment before climbing up the valley, through pastures and villages, then entering the ancient wooded slopes of the valley side. Shortly after picturesque Tan-y-Bwlch station, the train leaves the trees behind as it clings to the valley side. After rounding the spiral at Dduallt and passing through the tunnel, the train emerges beside Llyn Ystradau reservoir and the slate tips beckon. Each section has its fascinating story and your journey is much enhanced by the Traveller’s Guide with its open out map and line guide to enable you to follow the route.

On Train Stewards: Our friendly staff will pass through the train telling you information about what you can see from the window. They will also be selling guide books, snacks and drinks.

Tickets: Your pre-booked ticket is for a return journey. One way tickets are available on the day, subject to availability. Passengers using Transport for Wales services and making through journeys may book their seat in advance with the booking office (01766 516024). Please note, due to limited capacity on board our trains, you will not be able to return on a later train, unless you have booked two separate single journey tickets.
