We are pleased to announce that 1863-built locomotive Prince will be in steam on a specially built demonstration line at The Greatest Gathering, being hosted by Alstom at their Derby works between Friday 1st and Sunday 3rd August.
The locomotive will be able to carry passengers in two original Ffestiniog Railway carriages.
Recently overhauled to take part in both Railway 200 and our Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Prince has been a key part of the world’s oldest narrow-gauge railway since its delivery over 160 years ago. In fact, it was the first steam locomotive to operate on the Ffestiniog Railway when it was rescued from closure 70 years ago.
Joining Prince on the demonstration track will be Trangkil No.4, the last narrow-gauge steam locomotive built in the UK for industrial use in 1971. Manufactured in Leeds and exported for use on the Trangkil Sugar Mill in Indonesia, the locomotive returned to the UK in 2004, where it is part of the Statfold Barn Railway near Tamworth.
