The origins of the Ffestiniog Railway Society began with a meeting in Bristol, called by seventeen‑year‑old Leonard Heath Humphrys. Today marks the 75th anniversary of that historic gathering on 8 September 1951, held at the Bristol Railway Circle’s club room in St Mary’s House, Clifton.
We also celebrate the 10th anniversary of the commemorative Blue Plaque placed on St Mary’s House by the Bristol Group, honouring the moment that helped shape the future of the railway. The plaque unveiling featured Sir Bill McAlpine, Monika Humphrys (widow of Leonard), and attendees from the original 1951 meeting including John Bate and Vic Mitchell.

Dechreuodd hanes Cymdeithas Rheilffordd Ffestiniog gyda chyfarfod ym Mryste, a drefnwyd gan Leonard Heath Humphrys, a oedd yn 17 oed ar y pryd. Heddiw yw pen-blwydd 75 oed y cyfarfod hanesyddol hwnnw a gynhaliwyd ar 8 Medi 1951 yn ystafell glwb Bristol Railway Circle yn St Mary’s House, Clifton.
