We’re pleased to confirm the successful completion of a significant programme of boiler work on Merddin Emrys, one of our much-loved Double Fairlie locomotives.
Carried out between November 2025 and mid-March 2026, the work formed part of the locomotive’s scheduled 10-year boiler survey. This comprehensive inspection ensures the continued safety, reliability, and performance of the engine, in line with stringent heritage railway standards.
As part of the overhaul, the boiler underwent Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), allowing assessment of its condition in detail, without causing damage to the structure. Following this, extensive refurbishment work was undertaken, where boiler was fully re-tubed, including the replacement of superheater tubes, which play a vital role in improving efficiency and performance.
Further key elements of the work included the installation of a new foundation ring, an essential structural component at the base of the firebox and the fitting of 28 new screwed and weld-sealed stays. These stays are crucial in maintaining the strength and integrity of the firebox under pressure.
To complete the process, the boiler was subjected to a rigorous hydraulic test at 240 psi, confirming its ability to operate safely under working conditions.
This major engineering effort represents a significant investment in the long-term future of Merddin Emrys, ensuring it can continue to haul trains for years to come.
We would like to take this opportunity railway to thank the team at Boston Lodge for their skill and dedication in delivering this complex and important project.
Rydym yn falch o gadarnhau bod rhaglen sylweddol o waith ar foeler Merddin Emrys, un o’n locomotifau Double Fairlie, wedi’i chwblhau’n llwyddiannus.
Cynhaliwyd y gwaith rhwng Tachwedd 2025 a chanol mis Mawrth 2026, ac roedd yn rhan o archwiliad boeler 10 mlynedd rheolaidd y locomotif. Mae’r archwiliad cynhwysfawr hwn yn sicrhau diogelwch parhaus, dibynadwyedd a pherfformiad yr injan, yn unol â safonau llym rheilffyrdd treftadaeth.
Fel rhan o’r gwaith adnewyddu, cafodd y boeler Brofion Anninistriol (NDT), gan ganiatau asesu ei gyflwr yn fanwl heb achosi difrod i’r strwythur. Yn dilyn hyn, cynhaliwyd gwaith adfer helaeth, gyda’r boeler yn cael ei ail-diwbio’n llwyr, gan gynnwys disodli’r tiwbiau uwchboethi, sy’n chwarae rôl hanfodol wrth wella effeithlonrwydd a pherfformiad.
Roedd elfennau allweddol pellach o’r gwaith yn cynnwys gosod cylch sylfaen newydd, sef cydran strwythurol hanfodol ar waelod y blwch tân, a gosod 28 o arosfeydd newydd wedi’u sgriwio a’u selio drwy weldio. Mae’r arosfeydd hyn yn hollbwysig i gynnal cryfder a chyfanrwydd y blwch tân dan bwysau.
I gwblhau’r broses, cafodd y boeler ei roi trwy brawf hydrolig trylwyr ar 240 psi, gan gadarnhau ei allu i weithredu’n ddiogel o dan amodau gwaith.
Mae’r ymdrech beirianyddol sylweddol hon yn cynrychioli buddsoddiad pwysig yn nyfodol hirdymor Merddin Emrys, gan sicrhau y gall barhau i dynnu trenau am flynyddoedd i ddod.
Hoffem gymryd y cyfle hwn i ddiolch i’r tîm yn Boston Lodge am eu sgiliau a’u hymroddiad wrth gyflawni’r prosiect cymhleth a phwysig hwn.
