“As a youngster he used to come in with his dad to events at the National Railway Museum (NRM) and stand at the front of the Great Western Engine and take over… he would play to the audience and tell them all about it.”
Dave Mosley, former head of education at the NRM, said with amusement about the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways’, now Operations Manager, Matt Ellis.
Adding: “I was happy to let him get on with it as it was obvious he was destined for a job in steam!”
Matt said: “Our paths crossed again when I started working at the NRM. Dave had taken early retirement from his role by then but still did the odd bit of work driving the demonstration rides in the yard, particularly with Rocket.
“Dave could talk to anyone of any age at any technical level about the locos and generally entertain the visitors. When I ended up being Rail Ops Coordinator, Dave was one of my team until I left the NRM in 2014.”
Matt added; “Rocket has a very primitive valve gear, requiring manual operation of the valve events to change direction. I was on it with Dave one day, and having stopped I was attempting to start back in the opposite direction. Rocket could be a pain, and this day it was a straight refusal to move. Dave stood up in the tender, leant on the water barrel and started chatting to the passengers. Simultaneously explaining to them how the loco worked and taking the micky out of my attempt, much to their amusement!”
Matt did a Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship at the NRM, moving to the Rail Operations side on completion of his apprenticeship, before later moving to Beamish Museum as Keeper of Transport.
Following his time at Beamish Museum, Matt became the Operations Manager of the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways and since moving over to North Wales, the pair have kept in touch.
It was therefore fitting that Matt recently had the chance to reminisce with Dave, who was visiting North Wales, and share the footplate of James Spooner, the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland’s newest loco, 30 years on from a family photo of Matt on his first loco moving in steam, which was driven by Dave at the NRM.
Naturally, this was the perfect opportunity to create a then and now photo comparison!

“Pan roedd o’n ifanc roedd yn arfer dod i fewn gyda’i dad i ddigwyddiadau yn yr Amgueddfa Reilffordd Genedlaethol (ARG) a sefyll o flaen y Great Western Engine a chymryd drosodd… byddai’n chwarae I’r gynulleidfa ac yn dweud popeth wrthyn nhw am y peth.”
Meddai Dave Mosley, cyn bennaeth addysg yr ARG, gyda difyrrwch am Matt Ellis, sydd bellach yn Gyfarwyddwr Gweithrediadau Rheilffyrdd Ffestiniog ac Eryri.
Ychwanegodd: “Roeddwn i’n hapus i adael iddo fwrw ymlaen ag ef gan ei fod yn amlwg ei fod am gael swydd mewn stem yn y dyfodol!”
Dywedodd Matt: “Croesodd ein llwybrau eto pan ddechreuais weithio yn yr ARG. Roedd Dave wedi cymryd ymddeoliad cynnar o’i rôl erbyn hynny ond roedd yn dal i wneud ychydig o waith yn gyrru’r reidiau arddangos yn yr iard, yn enwedig gyda Rocket.
“Gallai Dave siarad ag unrhyw un o unrhyw oedran ar unrhyw lefel dechnegol am y locos a diddanu’r ymwelwyr yn gyffredinol. Pan ddesi’n Gydlynydd Gweithrediadau’r Rheilffyrdd, roedd Dave yn un o’m tîm nes i mi adael yr ARG yn 2014.”
Ychwanegodd Matt;“Mae gan roced gêr falf cyntefig iawn, sy’n gofyn am weithredu’r digwyddiadau falf â llaw i newid cyfeiriad. Roeddwn i arno gyda Dave un diwrnod, ac ar ôl stopio roeddwn i’n ceisio cychwyn yn ôl i’r cyfeiriad arall. Gallai roced fod yn boen, a’r diwrnod hwn roedd yn wrthodiad syth i symud. Cododd Dave yn y tendr, pwyso ar y gasgen ddŵr a dechrau sgwrsio â’r teithwyr. Esbonio iddyn nhw ar yr un pryd sut roedd y loco yn gweithio a thynnu’r pigi allan o fy ymgais, er mawr ddifyrrwch iddyn nhw!”
Gwnaeth Matt brentisiaeth Peirianneg Fecanyddol yn yr ARG, gan symud i ochr Gweithrediadau Rheilffyrdd ar ôl cwblhau ei brentisiaeth, cyn symud yn ddiweddarach i Amgueddfa Beamish fel Ceidwad Trafnidiaeth.
Yn dilyn ei gyfnod yn Amgueddfa Beamish, daeth Matt yn Rheolwr Gweithrediadau Rheilffyrdd Ffestiniog ac Eryri ac ers symud drosodd i Ogledd Cymru, mae’r pâr wedi cadw mewn cysylltiad.
Roedd yn addas felly pan gafodd Matt y cyfle yn ddiweddar i hel atgofion gyda Dave, a oedd yn ymweld â Gogledd Cymru, a rhannu troedlât James Spooner, loco diweddaraf Rheilffyrdd Ffestiniog ac Eryri, 30 mlynedd ar ôl y llun teuluol o Matt ar ei loco cyntaf, a yrrwyd gan Dave yn yr NRM.
Yn naturiol, roedd hwn yn gyfle perffaith i greu cymhariaeth lluniau ddoe a heddiw!
