Most commonly asked questions

– DO I NEED TO PRE-BOOK TICKETS?
Yes. The new service will operate on an online booking only policy. Tickets cannot be purchased at our booking office.

– HOW DOES THE PRICING SYSTEM WORK?
Ticketing will work on the basis that you must purchase a compartment in order to travel. The cost of a compartments will be £50 for the return journey, which includes the admission of 2 adults. Up to 4 additional passengers can be added to this initial £50 booking at a cost of £25 per adult and £1 per child. Child tickets are for those 15 years or younger, those aged 16 year or older will qualify as an adult ticket.

– WHAT ARE THE DEPARTURE TIMES OF TRAINS?
During this new service trains will depart from Porthmadog Harbour Station at the following times; 10:00, 11:05, 12:10, 13:15, 14:20 and 15:25. Our new booking timetable will be available on our website from the 14th of July onwards. We have adjusted our timetable to avoid crowding and allow more time to clean our carriages between journeys.

– HOW LONG IS THE JOURNEY TIME FROM PORTHMADOG TO TAN Y BWLCH?
The total journey time between Porthmadog Station and Tan y Bwlch Station will be approximately 2 hours 45 minutes, including a 1-hour layover at Tan y Bwlch Station.

– ARE YOU RUNNING TRAINS FROM CAERNARFON?
No. There are currently no services from Caernarfon. The only service currently available will be return journeys from Porthmadog Harbour Station to Tan y Bwlch. You cannot board the train at Tan y Bwlch, only from Harbour Station with a pre booked ticket.

Booking Tickets

– CAN I BOOK TICKETS AT THE BOOKING OFFICE?
No. Tickets will only be available via online booking and cannot be purchased at our Booking Office.

– CAN I PRINT OUT MY TICKET?
Yes. Both email confirmation of your tickets on your phone or a physical print out of your tickets will be acceptable.

– CAN I TRAVEL SOLO IN A COMPARTMENT?
Yes. However, if you are a solo traveller, you must pay the full £50 fee for the compartment.

– DO MEMBERS NEED TO PRE-BOOK?
Yes. Ffestiniog Railway and Welsh Highland Railway Society Members can travel free by calling our booking office, however please note there is limited member availability per train.

– CAN I USE MY GIFT CARD TO BOOK TICKETS?
Yes. However, please note that gift card holders will be unable to apply their discount when booking online however they can activate their gift card by calling our booking office; 01766 516024.

– CAN I USE MY ‘Y CERDYN’ DISCOUNT?
Due to the financial difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, we are regrettably unable to accept loyalty card discounts on our train services at this moment in time.

All holders of ‘Y Cerdyn’ will receive a 6-month extension to their scheme as a result of this decision. Please note that the ‘Y Cerdyn’ card can still be used for discounts in our catering outlets.

– CAN I BOOK A 1ST CLASS COMPARTMENT?
We are limiting the carriages to a certain set and therefore there will be no 1st Class compartments on the new service, all tickets will be a set price.

The Journey

– WHAT DAYS ARE YOU OPEN?
7 days a week. Our new service will operate throughout the week on a limited timetable. Please visit our booking page for a full list of departure times.

– CAN I CHOOSE MY COMPARTMENT?
Yes. You will be able to choose your compartment when you arrive at the station. You do not select your compartment when booking tickets online.

– CAN I MAKE A SINGLE JOURNEY TO TAN Y BWLCH?
Yes, please call our Booking Office to purchase a single ticket for £24.50. Please be aware that you will then be unable to catch a later train to Porthmadog.

– CAN I RETURN TO PORTHMADOG HARBOUR STATION ON A LATER TRAIN?
No. You must return to Porthmadog Harbour Station from Tan y Bwlch Station on your designated return train in the compartment you travelled up on the first leg of the journey.

– WILL DOGS BE ALLOWED ON BOARD?
Yes. Tickets for dogs will be priced at £3. However, please note there is limited space in the compartments and a maximum of 6 people per compartment.

– WILL THERE BE STORAGE AVAILABILITY FOR A PRAM?
Yes. There will be space for storing large Prams in the Guard’s carriage or alternatively they can be stored in your own compartment but please note there is limited space and a maximum of 6 people per compartment.
Catering

– WILL SPOONER’S CAFÉ BE OPEN?
Yes. Spooner’s café will be open for limited menu takeaway orders and will serve both passengers and general public. Takeaway food can be taken on board for the journey. The outdoor seating area will also be open.

– WILL TAN Y BWLCH CAFÉ BE OPEN?
Yes. Tan y Bwlch café will be open for limited menu takeaway orders and will serve both passengers and general public. Takeaway food can be taken on board for the journey. The outdoor seating area will also be open.

– WILL CAERNARFON STATION CAFÉ BE OPEN?
No. Café De Winton at Caernarfon Station will remain closed until further notice.

– CAN I USE MY ‘EAT AND DRINK’ CARD?
Yes. The ‘Eat and Drink’ card can still be used for discounts in our catering outlets.

– WILL THERE BE CATERING SERVICE ON BOARD THE TRAINS?
No, there will be no catering service on board the trains. Both Spooner’s and Tan y Bwlch cafés will be open for limited menu takeaway orders which can be taken on board for the journey.

– CAN I BRING MY OWN FOOD FOR THE JOURNEY?
Yes. However, please note that priority will be given to those who have purchased refreshments from Tan Y Bwlch Café on the outside seating benches.

– CAN I TAKE MY BIKE ON THE TRAIN?
No, there is limited capacity on our trains and therefore we are unfortunately unable to accept bikes on board the carriages.

Facilities

– ARE THERE TOILET FACILITIES AT THE STATIONS?
Yes. There are toilet facilities at both Porthmadog Harbour Station and Tan y Bwlch Station. Social Distancing signs will be clearly marked when queuing for the toilet facilities.

– WILL THE HARBOUR STATION RAILWAY STORE BE OPEN?
Yes, the Harbour Station Railway Store will be open.

Health and Safety Regulations

– HOW OFTEN WILL THE CARRIAGES BE CLEANED?
Our carriages will be deep cleaned regularly using ‘Zoono’, a long lasting disinfectant surface sanitiser which offers up to 30 days’ protection.
The carriages will also be cleaned by our staff between each service meaning the compartments will be safe and ready for you to enjoy upon arrival.

– DO I NEED TO WEAR A FACE COVERING?
We encourage visitors to wear face coverings when travelling on our services and complimentary masks will be available on the platform.

– WHAT ABOUT VISITORS WITH ADDITIONAL NEEDS OR RESTRICTED MOBILITY?
We ask that visitors who are travelling in a wheelchair or those with restricted mobility call the booking office; 01766 516024 to book their tickets so we can make sure there is ease of accessibility and sufficient seating space ready prior to your arrival.

Other

– WHICH LOCOMOTIVES WILL BE OPERATING ON THE NEW SERVICE?
Locomotives currently in service are Blanche, Linda, Prince and Welsh Pony. We are unable to specify which loco will be on a particular train due to the fluid nature of the rostering. We apologise for not being able to provide more detailed accurate information at this time.

– ARE YOUR SPECIAL EVENTS GOING AHEAD?
We will continue to monitor Welsh Government advice with regards to events and crowd gatherings and will therefore make an announcement on upcoming events shortly.
