– HOW DOES THE PRICING SYSTEM WORK?
You must purchase a seating bay priced at £80 which includes 2 adult travel tickets. Up to 4 additional passengers can be added to this initial £80 booking at a cost of £40 per adult and £2 per child. Please note child tickets are for those aged 15 years or younger, 16 years or older will count as an adult ticket. NOTE: there is a maximum of 6 people per seating bay.
– DO I NEED TO PRE-BOOK TICKETS?
Yes. There are only 30 seating bays available per train on this service. Therefore, advance online booking is required.
– CAN I BOOK TICKETS AT THE BOOKING OFFICE?
We strongly advise online booking to secure your seats, however tickets may be available to book from the station.
– CAN I PRINT OUT MY TICKET?
Yes. Both email confirmation of your tickets on your phone or a physical print out of your tickets will be acceptable.
– CAN I TRAVEL SOLO IN A SEATING BAY?
Yes. However, if you are a solo traveller, you must still pay the minimum fee of £80.
– DO MEMBERS NEED TO PRE-BOOK?
Yes. However please note Welsh Highland Railway and Ffestiniog Railway Society Members can only use their membership cards for travel on the weekend by calling our booking office; 01766 516024.
– CAN I USE MY GIFT CARD TO BOOK TICKETS?
Yes. However, please note that gift card holders will be unable to apply their discount when booking online however they can activate their gift card by calling our booking office; 01766 516024.
– CAN I USE MY ‘Y CERDYN’ DISCOUNT?
Due to the financial difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, we are regrettably unable to accept loyalty card discounts on our train services at this moment in time.
All holders of ‘Y Cerdyn’ will receive a 6-month extension to their scheme as a result of this decision. Please note that the ‘Y Cerdyn’ card can still be used for discounts in our catering outlets.
– CAN I BOOK A 1ST CLASS COMPARTMENT?
Yes, you can book a ‘First Class Luxury Pullman Day Out’ experience on our Welsh Highland Railway service. Please click here for further details.
– WHAT ARE THE DEPARTURE TIMES OF TRAINS?
Trains will run from Caernarfon Station between Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday each week with an additional service on Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday. There will be one trip per day, departing from Caernarfon Station at 11:00. Our new booking timetable will be available on our website from the 13th of August onwards.
– HOW LONG IS THE JOURNEY TIME FROM CAERNARFON TO BEDDGELERT?
The total journey time between Caernarfon Station and Beddgelert Station will be approx. 5 hours, including a 1hour 30mins layover at Beddgelert Station.
– WHAT DAYS ARE YOU OPEN?
Our initial service will operate between Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday each week. We will also be operating on Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday. Our new service will operate until the 19th September.
– HOW DOES THE SEATING SITUATION WORK?
Each standard carriage will be organised such that there is sufficient social distancing between each seating bay. There will be no physical dividers between seating bays however alternate bays will be blocked out of use.
– CAN I CHOOSE MY SEATS?
Yes. You will be able to choose your seating bay when you arrive at the station. You do not select your seats when booking tickets online.
– ARE THERE TOILET FACILITIES ON BOARD THE TRAIN?
Yes. Whilst we recommend you use the station toilets wherever possible, there are 2 small toilet compartments that can be used on board the train.
– CAN I MAKE A SINGLE JOURNEY TO BEDDGELERT?
Yes. However, please note that you will still need to pay the full minimum price of £80.
– CAN I RETURN TO CAERNARFON STATION ON A LATER TRAIN?
No. There will only be one train per day and therefore you must return to Caernarfon Station from Beddgelert Station on your designated return train in the seats you travelled on the first leg of the journey.
– ARE YOU RUNNING TRAINS FROM BETWEEN BEDDGELERT – PORTHMADOG?
No. There are currently no services from Beddgelert to Porthmadog. The only services currently available will be return journeys from Porthmadog Harbour Station to Tan y Bwlch and Caernarfon Station to Beddgelert.
– WILL DOGS BE ALLOWED ON BOARD?
Yes. Tickets for dogs will be priced at £3.
– WILL THERE BE STORAGE AVAILABILITY FOR A PRAM?
Yes. There will be space for storing large Prams in the Guard’s carriage or alternatively they can be stored in the carriage next to your seating bay.
– HOW DOES THE NEW HAMPER SCHEME WORK?
During the new Welsh Highland Railway booking process you will be able to purchase a selection of Food and Drink Hampers which will be added to your order and will be available for pick up at Caernarfon Station on the morning of your visit.
We are introducing this new Hamper Service as there will be no catering service available on board the trains.
Hamper choices are as follows;
Hamper 1 – ‘Prince Llewelyn’ (luxury Hamper for two persons) £30 for two persons.
Hamper 2 – ‘Gelert’ (standard Hamper) £9.50 per person.
Hamper 3 – ‘Engine Driver’s Lunchbox’ (Child’s Hamper) £5 per child.

– WILL CAERNARFON STATION CAFÉ DE WINTON BE OPEN?
Yes. Café De Winton will be open for table service and takeaway orders and will serve both passengers and general public. Both pre booked Hampers and Takeaway food can be taken on board for the journey.
– CAN I USE MY ‘EAT AND DRINK’ CARD?
Yes. The ‘Eat and Drink’ card can still be used for discounts in our catering outlets.
– WILL THERE BE CATERING SERVICE ON BOARD THE TRAINS?
No, there will be no catering service on board the trains. Caernarfon Station Café De Winton will be open for table service and takeaway orders which can be taken on board for the journey. We are also offering a Hamper Service which you can pre book during the ticket booking process. A small selection of refreshments will also be available at Beddgelert Station should you wish to buy something for your return journey.
– CAN I BRING MY OWN FOOD FOR THE JOURNEY?
Yes, you can bring your own food for the journey.
– ARE THERE TOILET FACILITIES AT THE STATIONS?
Yes. There are toilet facilities at both Caernarfon Station and Beddgelert Station. Social Distancing signs will be clearly marked when queuing for the toilet facilities.
– WILL THE CAERNARFON STATION RAILWAY SHOP BE OPEN?
Our Caernarfon Station shop will be open to both passengers and the general public.
– WHERE CAN I PARK AT CAERNARFON STATION?
Car parking is available in the nearby Castle car park £5.50 per day or at Tyre Centre car park opposite the station which is £3.50 per day.
Health and Safety Regulations
– HOW OFTEN WILL THE CARRAIGES BE CLEANED?
Our carriages will be deep cleaned regularly using ‘Zoono’, a long lasting disinfectant surface sanitiser which offers up to 30 days’ protection.
The carriages will also be cleaned by our staff at the end of each service meaning the carriages will be safe and ready for you to enjoy upon arrival.
– DO I NEED TO WEAR A FACE COVERING?
We ask that visitors wear face coverings when travelling on our services and complimentary masks will be available on the platform.
– WHAT ABOUT VISITORS WITH ADDITIONAL NEEDS OR RESTRICTED MOBILITY?
We ask that visitors who are travelling in a wheelchair or those with restricted mobility call the booking office; 01766 516024 to book their tickets so we can make sure there is ease of accessibility and sufficient seating space ready prior to your arrival.
– WHICH LOCOMOTIVES WILL BE OPERATING ON THE NEW SERVICE?
We are unable to specify which loco will be on a particular train due to the fluid nature of the rostering. We apologise for not being able to provide more detailed accurate information at this time.
– ARE YOUR SPECIAL EVENTS GOING AHEAD?
