Pullman Carriage visits Manchester

January 14th 2020

Taking centre stage at this year’s Caravan & Motorhome Show (16th-19th January) at Event City Manchester, is the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways’ spectacular new Pullman Observation Carriage - called Gwyrfai.

This beautiful carriage (which some say is reminiscent of the Orient Express or perhaps even from Harry Potter films!) was built entirely by craftsmen working at the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways’ historic engineering and carriage works at Boston Lodge, Porthmadog, North Wales. Named Gwyrfai in October 2019 (after a river in Snowdonia which flows alongside the track of the Welsh Highland Railway) the carriage entered service last year.

As you can imagine, it is no small feat to lift a full-size carriage from the railway in Snowdonia and transport it to Event City in Manchester and this will be happening over Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th January.  Once in position, visitors to the Caravan and Motorhome Show will be able to climb aboard and experience for themselves the splendid craftsmanship and luxury of the carriage’s interior. The carriage will also be laid out as ready for a full Pullman afternoon tea; something passengers travelling on the Railway can book in advance.

Gwyrfai is being taken to Manchester to not only promote the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways and demonstrate the quality and craftsmanship of its carriages, but to also highlight its spectacular route through the mountains of Snowdonia from the coast at Porthmadog to the coast at Caernarfon, as well as provide information on local caravan, camping and motorhome sites.
