Cambrian Trailways Reach The Top!
The recently launched Cambrian Trailways have won the Welsh Transport Awards Walking and Cycling category for 2008. The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Awards are an annual event that recognise and celebrate examples of best practice in Welsh transport.

A series of branded leaflets, developed by the Cambrian Railways Partnership (CRP), the Trailways promote self guided linear walks between railway stations on the Cambrian network.

Initially there are four Cambrian Trailways:

1. Borth - Aberystwyth
2. Llwyngwril - Barmouth
3. Caersws - Newtown
4. Criccieth - Porthmadog

A wide range of useful information on the routes is provided in the leaflets including an attractive and detailed strip map. The Cambrian Trailways project has been developed to optimise increasing interest in outdoor activities, such as walking, and access to these by means other than by car in an area noted for its beautiful coastal, country and mountainous landscapes.

It is envisaged that the Trailways project will be of interest to four main groups:

1. To local people to get out and participate in healthy activities in an environmentally sustainable way.
2. To visitors already in the area who are looking for activities to partake in.
3. To day visitors from the Shropshire, Midlands, Cheshire and Lancashire areas.
4. To visitors who will come to the area and undertake more than one of the walks over a number of days.

Commenting on the Trailways recognition Gerwyn Jones, the CRP Rail Development Officer, said "Winning a national award like this helps with raising the profile of the Trailways which is essential in making such projects a success by encouraging people to get out and enjoy the walks and of course using the local trains to do so!"

The Trailways project was supported by the Association of Community Rail Partnership (ACoRP) and by the Welsh Assembly Government through a funding stream administered by ACoRP.

The much sought after 'Draig' (Dragon) Award was presented at a prestigious ceremony held at the National Museum of Wales Cardiff on the evening of Wednesday the 6th of May.
