Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways

November 23rd 2010

Mike Hart, OBE

He was awarded the title in the 2010 New Year's Honours List, his citation reading: "Michael Clifford Hart, Director, Ffestiniog Railway Company and Chairman, Welsh Highland Railway Construction Limited, for services to the Rail Industry."

A former Chairman of the Ffestiniog Railway Company, Mike remains an active director and combines this with the role of Chairman of the subsidiary Welsh Highland Railway Construction Company, the organisation tasked with rebuilding the WHR between Caernarfon and Porthmadog. The railway is scheduled for official opening on Wednesday 20th April 2011.

Says Mike: "It has been very rewarding to have been able to play a part in the development of the Ffestiniog Railway over the years and I am particularly proud of the achievement of the employees, contractors and the hundreds of volunteers who have worked tirelessly to rebuild the Welsh Highland. This honour reflects their hard work, not just mine."

Mike has devoted his career to railways, both heritage and mainstream, starting as an apprentice at the Ffestiniog's Boston Lodge Works in Porthmadog, before eventually setting up his own company, Rotherham-based Railway Wheelset and Brake Limited, supplying components to the railway industry.

A keen interest in heritage railways led Mike to an association with a number of lines including the Kent and East Sussex Light Railway where he started work as a volunteer while still at school, but it is his continuing contribution to the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways for which he is best known.
