Sandstone event next year...
Message from Sandstone follows....
As a prominent 2-ft Narrow Gauge railway operating in the UK we would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to a very special event that we are holding in South Africa next year.
The Sandstone Steam Railroad is reasonably well known due to the publicity that we receive from top class publications like Narrow Gauge World in the UK. We are grateful to them because it helps us to showcase what we are doing in terms of 2-ft Narrow Gauge Railway Preservation in South Africa. It also attracts visitors to our events and who find our railway, which runs through mountainous country in the beautiful Eastern Free State, to be both an enjoyable and an exciting experience. The experience is enhanced by the fact that we have more than 20 locomotives which we normally deploy during our week-long event.
Stars of Sandstone which is our next event will take place from 4th-12th May 2013 . We have already had a good number of registrations from around the world. Quite a number of clubs, private railways, and others put groups together where 3-4 individuals. They rent a car at Johannesburg International Airport, drive the 4-hours to where we are, and then use the car for their convenience while they are there. We also have a world class locomotive refurbishment facility at the old South African Railways workshops in Bloemfontein and we normally arrange a day excursion so that people with a great degree of interest in the technical and restoration side of Narrow Gauge can discuss the finer engineering points with our Chief Fitter and his staff.
We would be grateful if you could circulate the attached flyer to your members. Perhaps just put a note with it and say they can contact our UK Liaison Office, namely Joanne West, on Tel: 01189 819600, and E-mail: email@example.com for further particulars on how to register.
Rest assured that fellow Narrow Gauge enthusiasts will be afforded a warm welcome should they decide to visit us.

Welsh Highland Railway linear gym
By Thursday, 27th December you will have had enough of the party hats, mince pies, recycled turkey and film repeats on the telly so why not come and have a work out on the railway.
Something a little different this year for the after christmas session, we are going to be cutting down trees and anything else that grows between the fence lines from Tryfan river bridge to Tryfan level crossing.
This will be a four day session from Thursday 27th to Sunday 30th December.
We will have the use of the large chipper so that we will not have to carry much away from the site.
By the time we finish we hope to have clear views for the loco crews through the whole site as well as opening up better vistas for the paying customers as well as letting the wonderfully restored Tryfan Junction station building be seen in all its glory.

First Aid Courses
Just a reminder that the First Aid at Work Courses will be held, as usual, in the first week after the end of the daily service. In 2012, that will be from Sat 3 November to Fri 9 November.
A two-day course for recertification will be held on Sat 3 and Sun 4 November; another will be held on Mon 5 and Fri 9 November, so you may choose whichever course is more convenient for you.
A four-day course for new entrants (and for lapsed first-aiders) will be held from Tues 6 to Fri 9 November. It is a nationally recognised course so volunteers may be able to persuade their employers to pay for their attendance. There is a cost to the Railway for doing this course but we do not pass it on to staff or volunteers.
Would Heads of Departments please check their departmental requirements and advise Sarah van Lottum (email@example.com in good time if they have staff who wish to undertake the courses? Please remember that we need plenty of time to arrange a suitable number of instructors as well as having to give a month's notice for the courses ahead so the sooner we get the info the better.
We shall also be pleased to hear from others wishing to take the course, but please book through your HoD.
The more first aiders we have, the better. You never know when you might need one.
