September 15th - 17th - Welsh Highland Railway - Super Power - "Welsh Highland Stars"

The annual Welsh Highland Railway Super Power weekends are always worth a visit, but this year's three-day event taking place from September 15-17 promises to be special.

As is normal for this weekend, there will be an intensive service operating over the three days with many additional departures over and above the standard Welsh Highland service trains. We have set a precedent for unique workings in previous years and we have no intention of stopping now!

There will be passenger, vintage, freight and mixed trains running throughout the weekend, and consequently many favourites from the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland fleet of locomotives will be in use for people to enjoy.

The Snowdonia National Park through which the railway runs is well known for its stunning and varied landscapes which of course can be admired from the train during daylight hours, but are you aware that Wales now leads the world in the percentage of its territory enjoying protected status for its night skies?

Snowdonia National Park is now an International Dark Sky Reserve, only the tenth place in the world to gain this status, and it is our intention to celebrate this achievement at the gala with a number of special opportunities for visitors to enjoy.

On the Friday evening at Dinas there will be a talk by award-winning local dark sky photographer Kris Williams for members and event rover ticket holders.

Dinas will also be open all day on the Saturday. There will be the opportunity to checkl the progress on NG/G16 No. 130, NG/G15 No 134, and K1. Quarry Hunslet 'Lilla' will also be in steam offering short train rides.

'Dark Sky Wales' will also be at Dinas with their 'Digital Planetarium' complete with stunning visual shows designed by professional astronomers. In the planetarium guests will enjoy a tour of the heavens looking at constellations and the mythology including tales from the Mabinogio. Zoom in to the planets and explore them in detail before venturing out of the Milky Way and visit other galaxies. This amazing experience can be booked online here.

A cafe/bar will be open all day in the goods shed.

Also on the Saturday, there will be a guided walk from Rhyd Ddu to Beddgelert, covering local history and the National Park's dark sky status.

Tickets are available to purchase online here, and we hope to provide more detailed information regarding other special attractions in due course.
