Happy birthday to the Festiniog!
May 23rd is the 180th anniversary of the Festiniog Railway's Act of Parliament.

180 years ago today, King William IV gave the Royal Assent to the bill forming what is now the world's oldest independent railway compay - the Festiniog Railway.

Since then, the railway has been at the forefront of technology, introducing the world's first narrow gauge steam locomotives, the first bogie carriages and pioneering radical developments such as the Double Fairlie.

In 1979, Earl of Merioneth became the first new-build steam locomotive to be constructed in the preservation era and last year, some 370,000 passenger journeys took place over the 40 miles of the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland.

The railway continues to innovate in the 21st Century, with replica Lynton & Barnstaple loco Lyd and a series of new carriages leaving Boston Lodge Works - a record-breaker itself, being the oldest working railway workshop in the world and the only one to have built steam locomotives in the 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries.

The railway has now been officially recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest in the world. To celebrate, for one night only, our own Spooner's Ale will be available for just £1.80 a pint.

Guinness is also available...
