Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway steams into Shrewsbury

August 7th 2017

The  Shrewsbury Flower Show – claimed to be the world’s longest-running flower show - takes place on the 11th & 12th August this year and joining in the celebrations will be a steam locomotive nearly as old.

Lilla was built in Leeds in 1891 and celebrates her 126th birthday this year. She will form the centrepiece of the railway’s exhibit at Shrewsbury.

The Shrewsbury Flower Show is held in The Quarry Park - the main recreational park for the town's residents. The show has been held in this location for over 129 years placing the event into The Guinness Book of World Records for the longest running horticultural event held in the same location.

Come and see 'Lilla', take photos, enjoy a ride and find out more about beautiful North Wales - there's a warm, Welsh welcome waiting for you!

But the railway isn’t just about steam and scenery – there’s an active parks and gardens department whose volunteers look after gardens, tubs and window boxes at several stations on the 40 mile line.

There's a range of gardens, with trees, shrubs and perennials and others with display bedding. Each year, volunteers plant around 2,000 annuals and 3,000 bulbs. The group comes from all over the UK and always welcomes new helpers. Volunteers can work with a small group or spend a few hours on their own at one of our stations. They can come for a couple of hours, a couple of days or even a week.

If you enjoy gardening, why not try something a little different, surrounded by historic steam engines and the magnificent scenery of Snowdonia? To find out more, email volunteer@ffwhr.com
