The 2013 F&WHR Calendar is with us now and has a fantastic set of photographs in it. The price has been held at £7 for yet another year, it is available from the web shop at www.festshop.co.uk and from our shops for anyone lucky enough to be travelling on the trains. If you would like to order a calendar or anything else that we sell but don’t want to use the web shop and can’t shop in person then please feel free to call us on 01766 516034 and we will be delighted to take your order. This number is the Porthmadog shop number so sometimes we can be very busy behind the counter for example when a train comes in, so please bear with us and if we don’t answer straight away try again half an hour later.
Long awaited sequel, the latest edition of TLC; Q2 2012 is also almost with us and has some superb pictures of people and places along the line, it will make a great read and a super introduction to both railways for the new traveller.
On the 14th of April the special train named The Snowdonian is being run again. http://phase5.org.uk/ will take you to more information about the train itself which promises to be a very special event as it was last year. In association with the trip a limited edition Gomms badge is being made which will be available on the day. A superb new 448 page book on the rebuilding of the new Welsh Highland Railway is being written by Gordon Rushton called Welsh Highland Railway Renaissance it will be the unofficial story of the restoration of the WHR, will be in A4, full colour and will cost £68 and will be available from us as soon as it is published which is expected to be sometime after Easter.
The latest Boston Lodge loco, Lyd is out pulling trains and the book of the same name is selling well and now has a hard back cover with a picture of the loco in SR green on it. We have kept the price at a very reasonable £15 so get yours while stocks last. Also now available is a DVD called ‘Lyd – A New Locomotive’. It has over an hour of footage of the locomotive in action and includes much footage shot especially for the programme and some archive material shot over its construction and testing. The final chapter is a close look round the loco with Paul Lewin as he prepares it for a trip up the line.
From David Payling the principal author of the Lyd book, another excellent work is in the pipeline. This will be called ‘Garratts and Kalaharis of the Welsh Highland’ and will feature all of the NGG16s and 15s in their former lives in South Africa and in their new homes in Gwynedd. There will be many photographs and scale plans making the book an ideal read for fans of the real thing and modellers alike.
Another book now in stock is ‘Darjeeling Revisited’ by Bob Cable and published by Middleton Press, it has 96 pages featuring 144 colour photographs. It makes a great read for anyone new to or familiar with the DHR.
Outside the shop window and across the railway at harbour station big changes have been taking place with the works to widen the cob to make room for the new loop and platform for the WHR to be constructed next winter. While the work has been going on we have had a camera taking time lapse pictures of every day which have been published on the internet and we have also been following the construction process with the railways video camera. Once the contractors have finished the current phase of work we will release a DVD of all the time lapse videos, these will be shown at various speeds. It is of note that the work looks very different at the different speeds. The disk will also feature a twenty minute chapter about the works.
Now available from F&WHR shops is the WHR society produced softback book ‘Rheilffordd Eryri – A Pictorial History’. This has many colour photographs of the characters who built the line and the locations they built it in and shows an interesting perspective on this process, all for £9.50. We also have available binders for Snowdon Ranger, they come in two sizes either of which retail at £5.
We also have some good news for the railway modeller as in addition to the current products that we have been carrying for a while we will shortly have some exciting new ranges to add to the mix. The biggest name is Hornby, we will be starting with a selection of their Skaledale cast resin buildings which being 4mm to the foot scale are ideal for 009 narrow gauge layouts as well as 00 gauge. We will also carry a small range of locomotives throughout the year. Making a welcome return to the shop are ROCO Minitrains ready to run narrow gauge wagons. One of the most exciting newcomers will be a new name to many, Brian Madge. The first kit from him will be a 009 version of quarry Hunslet Velinheli, the kit will include Cast whitemetal and etched brass and nickel silver parts and an outside framed chassis; complete with motor and gears. Another new name is Narrow Planet who make name and works plates for narrow gauge models. They are making a series of complete sets for all the current fleet of F&WHR locos, these are very neatly etched onto brass.
