The station building was roofed in Blaenau slate so, in recognition of this, a commemorative plaque has been produced at Llechwedd Slate Caverns.
On Monday 1st July, a delegation from the North Cheshire Rail Users Group travelled from Helsby to Blaenau Ffestiniog as guests of Arriva Trains Wales.
They were met by Councillor Mandy Williams-Davies, chair of Blaenau Ffestiniog Town Council and Clare Britton, chair of the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism on arrival at 11.30. Mandy accompanied them to Llechwedd where they had a tour of the caverns, lunch and an official presentation of the plaque.
They returned to the Ffestiniog Railway station at 14.20 where there were speeches and the highlight of the day, the children of nearby Ysgol Maenofferen singing a song written specially to celebrate the 150th anniversary of steam on the Ffestiniog Railway. The group presented the children with some old photographs of their station before departing on the 1457 Arriva Trains Wales service for Helsby where the plaque was to be received by Helsby Parrish Council.
The delegates were overwhelmed by their welcome and have promised not only to visit again but to tell others about Blaenau. One gentleman who had not been for a few years was amazed by the transformation in the town.
