Film shows at The Cellb (the Old Court House) in Blaenau Ffestiniog

There will be films in the cafe between Sat 23rd April and Mon 2nd May. These are free of charge for cafe visitors. There is a choice of film; “Roof over your Head”, a fasinating  circa 1900 quarrying documentary filmed in Blaenau Ffestiniog, and “Y Chwarelwr”, a 1935 black and white film held by the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales showing different aspects of the slate quarryman's life in Blaenau Ffestiniog.

This black and white film was the first to be made with a Welsh language soundtrack (on separate discs). The film shows different aspects of the slate quarryman's life in Blaenau Ffestiniog e.g. home, work, chapel, courtship, and education of the younger generation.

The cafe is open daily serving freshly made snacks and is only a 5 minute walk from the station.

From a Footplate Perspective - An exhibition of railway paintings

The exhibition features the work of three enthusiastic railway artists : Ken Pierce, an ex-art teacher at Ysgol y Moelwyn, Blaenau Ffestiniog. Wil Roberts, an ex-railway fireman who trained at the Chelsea College of Art, and Jim Teague, a train driver and railway artist.

The exhibition has been in the planning stage for several years, with the intention of coinciding with the opening, in its entirety, of the WHR. Now the three artists have put together an excellent collection of railway paintings, some of which feature the WHR.

Ken Pierce’s contribution is extremely varied with many of the paintings depicting historical situations as well as scenes from the narrow gauge sector. Wil Roberts’ work is striking in its visual impact. Strong images, which rely on mood, as well as complex and detailed work capturing accurately topics such as busy railway sidings. Jim Teague's work is softer, and relies more on atmosphere. Steam trains seem to become part of the landscape.

The show can be seen at the Rob Piercy Gallery, and opens with a preview of the work on the 19th April, 2011 between 5pm and 8pm. Thereafter the show can be seen at the above venue until Monday, 2nd May.

The gallery details are:

Opening times: Monday to Saturday 10.00am to 5.00pm. Closed on Sundays.
